Tripod 7Cs component guide
Care: What Strong Observation Evidence Can Look Like
Quick answer: Care is visible when students experience respect, encouragement, and genuine interest while still being held to meaningful academic expectations.
Use the 7Cs as a student-experience lens: care, control, clarity, challenge, captivation, conferencing, and consolidation should be felt in the lesson. For Care, the strongest preparation question is not “Did I mention it?” but “What student evidence will make this part of Tripod 7Cs observable?”
A classroom micro-scenario
During a challenging task, the teacher notices hesitation, invites a student into the thinking without lowering the demand, and follows up on the student's idea so the class sees that contributions matter.
Teacher moves that fit this component
- use names and prior knowledge of students to invite participation
- respond to mistakes as information rather than embarrassment
- pair warmth with clear academic expectations
Evidence students can produce
- students volunteer tentative thinking
- students ask for help without avoiding the task
- peer responses remain respectful during disagreement
What an administrator may be able to see
- routines that protect learning time and allow students to act independently
- students taking academic risks without ridicule
- clear expectations paired with respectful redirection
What students might be doing
- transition with minimal loss of learning time
- use routines to access materials, partners, or support
- disagree, make mistakes, and ask for clarification safely
What students might be saying
- “I am not sure yet, but here is what I notice…”
- “Can we go back to the success criteria?”
- “I disagree with the idea, not the person.”
Artifacts that can make evidence concrete
- student-created norms or discussion expectations
- accessible routines and material systems
- seating or grouping plan tied to learning purpose
Weak evidence vs. stronger evidence
Weak or incomplete evidence: The room is quiet and compliant, but students rely on the teacher for every transition and decision.
Stronger evidence: Students use established routines to manage materials, discussion, collaboration, and productive struggle so the environment actively supports learning.
Common missed opportunities
- Care is named in the lesson plan but no student behavior demonstrates it.
- The teacher can explain the intent, but the observer would have to infer too much because the evidence remains hidden.
- Only one student produces the evidence, so it is difficult to judge how broadly learning is occurring.
- The teacher collects information but the next instructional move does not respond to it.
Planning questions for Care
- At what exact moment should Care become visible?
- What should students be doing differently because this component is strong?
- What student language would tell me the intended thinking is actually happening?
- What artifact, response, or behavior can provide evidence beyond my own explanation?
- What will I change if the evidence is weaker or stronger than expected?
